Take a Walk on the Wide Side

Pick up any magazine or flick through Instagram and you can’t help but notice that the trousers to be seen in this season are wide and in some cases, extremely so…
So how do you wear this exaggerated style without being overtaken by it?
The simplest way is to balance out the width of the trousers by wearing them with slim fitting tops. If however you are willing to push the boundaries of style a little further, don’t shy away from tops with frills and embellishments, just choose them in a contrasting fabric/colour to your trews. Case in point, a frilly satin blouse in a bold colour can look striking when teamed with denim culottes, as demonstrated by Merchant Archives’ SS17 collection. Their super wide legged denim jumpsuit has also set the JD girls hearts a flutter.
With its heritage firmly rooted in the seventies, Diane Von Furstenberg is a label which also knows a thing or two about how to ‘do’ wide trousers. Their floral print version is for anyone who’s motto is ‘go bold or go home’. We will be wearing ours with flats rather than heels this summer – much more Edinburgh friendly.
For days when smart/casual dressing is called for, take inspiration from the Queen of denim, Donna Ida, and opt for a pair of her Pimp my Margot culottes. Donna Ida herself shows that even petite frames can work the wide leg look – just make sure your trousers are no longer than ankle length and tuck in your top so you are still defining your waist.
